If you're a parent or have kiddos in your life, are you confident you know how much sleep your kiddos should be getting?  The ideal amounts may be different than what you think.

It's true for adults and children alike, getting enough sleep is essential for optimum health, and the needed amounts are probably more than you expect.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has released it's optimum amount recommendations for infants through teenagers.  Here are the highlights:

Infants 4 months - 12 months = 12 to 16 hours per 24 hours

Children 1 year - 2 years old = 11 to 14 hours per 24 hours

Children 3 years - 5 years = 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours

Children 6 years - 12 years = 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours

Teens 13 years - 18 years = 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours

Not getting enough sleep can contribute to hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and depression.
