Following the world premiere of Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time, the social media embargo has lifted (the review embargo isn’t up for a couple more weeks) and the first reactions from the premiere are in. They’re mostly good-to-mixed, which may seem a little disappointing to some fans who are really excited about this movie, but, again, these are first reactions and range everywhere from “inspiring” to “a tragedy,” so there’s far from a consensus.

Many on Twitter praised the film, calling it “gorgeously shot,” “beautiful,” and “full of emotion and wonder.” Storm Reid as Meg Murry was a highlight, and everyone seemed to love the costumes and visual effects.

When it comes to the plot of the movie, other reactions were less charitable, noting that the tone of the film is uneven and that it takes a while to really take off.

It’s notable that there seems to be a gender imbalance between the more and less charitable reviews, but that’s none of my business.

A Wrinkle in Time hits theaters March 9.
