One of the many things I absolutely love about living in Idaho is that we are surrounded by some of the most beautiful places you’ll ever see. Whether it’s a quick hike in the Boise Foothills, heading up toward McCall, or tackling one of those bucket-list hikes in the Sawtooths, there’s always somewhere to explore.

A Few Idaho Hiking Reminders

But as much as I love getting outdoors, Idaho has a way of reminding you that nature is still in charge. So, a couple quick hiking tips before you head out.

Stay Hydrated

Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Seriously, Idaho’s dry climate will sneak up on you, especially if you’re hiking in the heat.

Phone A Friend

Let somebody know where you’re going. Cell service can disappear pretty quickly once you get off the beaten path, so tell a friend or family member what trail you’re hitting and when you plan to be back.

When Nature Attacks

Speaking of things that can sneak up on you… keep an eye out for wildlife. Rattlesnakes in the lower elevations, moose and bears in the mountains. Remember, if you see them, enjoy the view… from a distance.

Be Smart

Also, don’t be afraid to turn around. The summit, the lake, the lookout point… it’ll all still be there another day. If the weather changes, you’re running low on water, or you’re just not feeling it, there’s no shame in calling it. The goal isn’t just to finish the hike, it’s to make it home safely.

Take It All In

And finally, take a minute to appreciate where you are. Put the phone down for a second. Listen to the creek. Take in the view. We live in an incredible state, and sometimes the best part of the hike isn’t getting to the destination, it’s everything you see along the way.

Get Out And Explore

Now get outside and enjoy Idaho… and maybe throw an extra granola bar in your backpack. Trust me on that one!
