Remember when a typical workday lasted from 9am to 5pm?  Dolly Parton made it a movie! Then it became 8am to 5pm.  Today our regular office workday can begin before the sun rises and end when it's dark -- even in the summer! All work and no play makes for a very dull life. For me, achieving that ever elusive work-life balance becomes critical.  Especially with three kids in tow as well as a new puppy!

I’ve got the secret sauce to this balance thing…exercise. Maybe not new information for you but I’m trying to figure out if I can really balance it all! Well researchers at Saint Leo University, St. Louis University, University of Houston-Victoria and Illinois State University have concluded that exercise affects how we feel about our work-life balance.

While several previous studies have shown that exercise helps reduce stress (which we all know) ---be it through yoga or high-intensity aerobic exercise -- no study to date has shown if reducing stress helps empower us to feel we have a better work-life balance. Individuals who exercised regularly were more confident they could handle the interaction of their work and home life and were less likely to be stressed at work. It get’s even better as the findings suggest that employers can help employees with work-life balance by encouraging them to exercise.   Maybe my boss would consider turning one of our conference rooms in to a small workout room?

Make it a healthy day!
