Have you been thinking about adding a cat to your family? If you are, the Idaho Humane Society hopes you'll stop by today!

On Thursday, July 15 the Idaho Humane Society is hosting a FREE cat adoption event at their Bird Street Adoption Center from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Typically, adopting a cat age 17 weeks to four years old costs $40, older cats ages 5-7 are normally $25 and on most days senior cats have an adoption fee of $10. Adopting on FREE cat day means you get to keep that money to spoil your new furry friend with toys and treats as you welcome them into your home! You can find the adoption center at 1300 S Bird Street in Boise.

When we checked last night, there were almost 40 socialized cats currently calling the cattery or catio at IHS home. You can preview adoptable cats you may find today HERE. If you find one that you'd like to take home during the event, you'll need to complete the packet of adoption paperwork which typically takes 30 minutes to an hour.

As someone who wanted a cat my entire childhood but didn't have Kota enter my life until I was 23, I'm one to rave about how rewarding cat ownership is. I also want to remind you that a FREE cat is a lifelong investment, so if you're taking advantage of this offer PLEASE be prepared to make them your fur-ever friend.

Dakota entered my life as a free kitten. I didn't blink buying him food, toys and supplies over the past 10 years but it wasn't until two years ago that he earned the title "the most expensive free cat ever" from my husband. Kota ended up developing a blocked urinary tract that resulted in a three day ICU stay at West Vet. Our bills for his stay and follow-up care tallied over $3,000.

He was only 7 years old at the time. The loving staff at West Vet knew they could pull him through and give us many years together. I regret nothing about telling them to move forward with a treatment plan. The camera roll full of silly pictures I have of him since he came home are some of my favorites.

FYI, the cool cat staring at you from the couch is Kota. You can't adopt him, but I hope you find a kitty that's even half as cool as he is!
