There are two things I know about Idaho summers.

First, grocery store produce just doesn’t taste the same.

Second, if you see a handwritten sign pointing toward fresh peaches or sweet corn, you’re probably about to make a great decision.

One of my favorite summer traditions is stopping at local fruit stands. Whether it’s juicy peaches, vine-ripened tomatoes, sweet corn, watermelon, cherries, or fresh berries, buying directly from local growers just feels like summer in Idaho.

If you’re looking to fill your kitchen with the freshest produce around, here are some Treasure Valley favorites.

Don’t Forget the Small Roadside Stands

One of the best parts about summer is discovering those little family-run produce stands that seem to appear overnight.

As you drive through Caldwell, Greenleaf, Parma, Wilder, Emmett, Star and Kuna, keep an eye out for handwritten signs advertising sweet corn, peaches, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers and fresh-cut flowers.

Some of the best produce you’ll eat all summer comes from these small family farms that sell only what they picked that morning.

Why Shopping Local Just Tastes Better

Buying from local fruit stands supports Idaho farm families, keeps money in our local communities, and often means your fruits and vegetables were harvested just hours before you bring them home.

That’s hard to beat.

So the next time you’re heading home from work or taking a weekend drive through the Treasure Valley, skip the grocery store for a day. Pull over at a local fruit stand, grab a bag of peaches or a dozen ears of sweet corn, and enjoy one of the best parts of an Idaho summer.
