Now is the Time to Clear the Shelters
Maybe you've seen pictures on social media of shelters that are completely empty right now. Yay! There are lots of dogs getting new homes because we're quarantined and need the company. But if you're planning to adopt in Boise, there's something you need to know about the way the process has changed.
The Idaho Humane Society said they've temporarily moved to an online application process for all adoptable pets because of the coronavirus situation. You'll still be able to meet the pet you pick before the adoption is finalized.
Just look through the adoptable animals and if you find one you’re interested in you can fill out an application right there on their website. They'll contact applicants in the order received if they are a good fit, and if everything works out you'll be able to book a meet-and-greet appointment within 24 hours.
I've already got two dogs, two cats, and two fish, and I'm thinking about adding more just to upset the balance. We adopted our super cuddly and slightly spazzy Libby in November 2016, and she is the best lap dog ever. She curls up on my lap every time I sit on the couch, and if I get up for a second, she's right back on my lap the next time I sit down like a boomerang. She's a Mini Pin-Chihuahua mix and there could be a couple of other blends in there too, we're not too sure. All we know is that she's always happy, and she's been an awesome addition to our family.
The Humane Society also has a pet food program that can supply food for your pet if you're having trouble doing that right now. The COVID-19 Pet Food Pantry helps households with four pets or less with temporary food supplies, and it does have some income requirements. The next food distribution is happening April 29th.
Donations are huge, and the Humane Society can always use dog and cat toys and food, cat litter, towels, heating pads, washable rugs, gift cards to hardware stores, and lots of other things that help the shelter thrive. Since now may not be the time to drop things off, a financial contribution might be better.
Whether it's through adoption or donation, now is a great time to help a pup.
