There are few things more "Boise" than going for a hike in the Foothills during the summer months. Unfortunately, what was meant to be a fun hike turned deadly for one beloved family pet.
On Monday, Ridge to Rivers shared a warning about coyotes in Hulls Gulch via their Facebook page in hopes of reaching as many trail users as possible. According to the post:
"A hiker lost their dog to a coyote in Lower Hulls Gulch, approximately .5-miles above the Red Cliffs Trail junction yesterday. Please be ultra-vigilant with your pets, and leash them for their own safety while traveling in this area."
The family who lost their pet detailed the encounter in the comments section. According to Cassie S., the dog was less than two feet from her daughter when the coyote came out of a bush and snatched him from the trail. It happened around 12:30 p.m.
Another trail user posted that their border collie mix was attacked in the Upper Hulls Gulch area this weekend. She survived, but is healing from a large gouge to her hind quarters.
Ridge to Rivers initially reported coyotes in Hulls Gulch at the intersection of Kestrel and the Military Reserve Connection and in the Table Rock area on April 21. As more reports from trail users come in, they've worked to add additional signage about sightings and dens with pups to the trails where sightings were reported.

At this time, they say that the best thing you can do to protect your pet in these areas is to keep them leashed and close to you even on off-leash trails.
