I don't know what causes insomnia. I think I have an idea of what causes mine. It's not that I'm not tired, because I am. It's not that I don't want to go to bed, because I do. For me, it's a combination of stress, caffeine, and the inability to turn my brain off. I have found that the only real cure for this is to take some of the sleep-aid medicines that you can get over the counter. The problem that I have with those is that I always think that if someone needs me in the middle of the night, I will sleep through their call or text. I also feel like it's hard to wake up from those.

If you are like millions of other people and me, this can make for some real inconsistent energy days at work. Some days after a good night's sleep, you feel great. Other days, you're dragging and are ready to go home by 2 or 3 o'clock. One of the positives about living in Boise during the COVID era is that there aren't many options. It's not like many things are open. I'm not a bar person, and I'm not looking to meet people, so I find myself watching some weird stuff on Netflix. Late at night, I know that I'm not going to see the end of whatever I start, so I don't want to be interested in whatever it is I'm watching. Because I'm in and out all night, the plot gets twisted in my head, which improves some things, but things rarely make sense. I fill in the missing plot points with my imagination. The real version is never as good.

I also find myself driving around. I drive all over. I'll go downtown. I'll go to Nampa. The funny part is that I feel like a teenager, and I wonder if the police will pull me over. It's not like I'm speeding or doing anything wrong, but I guess those fears from my youth are still there, even though I'm not subject to a curfew anymore. I always wonder if I'm going to see some crazy stuff on my drives. I never do, but when I get back home, I almost always go to sleep.

If you have any other fun ideas to spend your insomniac moments in Boise, I'd love to hear your suggestions!
