I'm all for a four-day work week, but a four-day school week?! Seems like a big mess to me, but this Idaho school district is highly considering it.

First off, I'm going to step up on my soapbox for a minute. Coming from a parents perspective, I have never understood how schools can just take a day off here and there, throw in an early out day, and then parents are just supposed to accommodate this inconsistent crazy schedule.

It seems to me like most parents have to work these days. This isn't 1954 and I would suspect most Mom's and Dad's have to bring in two incomes. How do you do that when your kid randomly has a day off of school or suddenly gets out early? I am beyond blessed to work odd hours in a career that I love that allows me to be there when the kids get our early, but what about those 9-5 working parents? I don't know how you do it!

Now, Sugar-Salem is considering a four-day school week and I'm thinking what about all the parents that have to go to work on Friday?!

A decision could be reached on the issue during a school board meeting tonight.

The website sugarsalem.org says the goal is

to increase student attendance, increase teacher attendance, and use student-teacher time more effectively throughout the week.

They say the pros are increased student attendance and financial savings. The cons are demands for daycare services and longer school days for kids.

Sugar-Salem is far from the only school district in Idaho to follow a four-day week. In fact, I was stunned to learn in an article at eastidahonews.com that 58 school districts and charter schools are already operating on this schedule. What are your thoughts? Are you for or against a four-day school week?
