Chris Martin ‘Still Wakes Up Down’ After Split From Gwyneth Paltrow
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has emotionally recovered from a March 2014 split from actress Gwyneth Paltrow, but told The Sunday Times that the breakup initially left him in a depression in an interview published yesterday (March 20).
Though reports indicated Martin's famous "uncoupling" from Paltrow was a friendly one, the singer has explained the initial fallout was rough, and it wasn't until he turned to the "The Guest House" by 13th-century writer Rumi that he was able to see the light.
"That one Rumi poem changes everything," Martin noted. "It says that even when you're unhappy, it's good for you. It took me a year to get it. A year of depression and all that."
And now that he's experienced a bit of clarity, Martin says he and Paltrow are a strong co-parenting team and remain a part of each other's lives.
"It's a divorce but it's a weird one. It's funny," he said. "I don't think about that word very often: 'divorce.' I don't see it that way. I see it more like you meet someone, you have some time together and things just move through. I've lived a lot of life since then."
"I still wake up down a lot of days. But now I feel like I've been given the tools to turn it around," he added. "You can come at it very aggressively and blame and blame. Or you can put yourself in the garage, so to speak. Take yourself apart and clean off the bits. Reassemble."
