What would you do? What would you do if you found out your pet was sick and needed to have surgery to save their life, but the price was more than you could afford or are comfortable with? Our pets are family members and trying to decide what to do is not an easy decision. There is a lot that has to be taken into account. How much is the surgery? Do you have other children? What do your bills and finances look like? There are many factors to think about, but when it comes to paying a high bill to save your pet's life, what would you do?

Many people in the Gem State have pets. It can be a typical pet like a dog, a cat, or a bird, or perhaps you have a farm animal you have grown attached to like a cow, a pig, goat, sheep, or horse. From time to time these animals get sick, eat something they shouldn't, or are attacked by other animals. When these situations arise it typically leads to a visit to the vet and could result in needing surgery. Like with humans, surgery for animals is not cheap, and it can be shocking to hear the cost to save your pet. While most would say yes, do what it takes, not everyone is in that financial standing, especially in Idaho. While nobody wants to lose their beloved animal, there is much to consider before signing the papers and telling a vet to do whatever it needs to do.

Recently my wife and I experienced a day when we had to take our dog to the vet after throwing up for a day to find out she had a rock stuck inside of her, blocking her from doing her business. The surgery was a little more than we had anticipated and we had to sit down and discuss. Our dog was a couple of months short of turning two, but we also have kids to consider and where we are financially. Ultimately we made the call, hoping she would live for many years and justify our decision. If she had been older though, or the surgery was a little more, as tough as it would be, putting her down would be an option. Age, health, other financial decisions, and how much you have in your bank account or savings all need to be considered, as well as your other children who will need medical procedures as well

It isn't easy to decide to drain your bank account for a pet that may or may not live long or through the operation, but if your pet is young, healthy, and you have the means it helps. With surgeries being so expensive for pets it can be tough to pay the bill, but some pets are worth it. If faced with this tough choice, what would you do?
