Ophidiophobia

Unfamiliar with the condition? That's okay. The clinical term for snake phobia isn't one you hear bandied about much. But why is that? In 2020, the National Institutes of Health reported snakes triggered high levels of anxiety in over 50% of people surveyed.

...snakes elicited anxiety in 53.3% [of those surveyed] and ophidiophobia, a clinically relevant fear of snakes, is believed to affect 2–3% of [the] population [...] representing as much as a half of all animal phobias.

-National Institutes of Health, Jakub Polák, et al.

Women fear snakes more than men do.

Consensus in the behavioral science field holds that the dysregulated and irrational fear of animals is one of the most common human phobias with a lifetime prevalence of 3.3 to 5.7%.

And, like other anxiety disorders, zoophobias typically affect four times as many women than men. Can you blame us? Snakes have had it out for women since the days of Adam and Eve 😳

How worrisome are snake bites in Idaho?

If we base the answer off the staticians at World Population Review, they're nothing to obsess over. Since the start of 2024, only 10 Idahoans have been bitten by poisonous snakes. We're guessing the 1,408 Texans that have crossed paths with lethal serpents would say Idaho's in pretty good shape.
