After announcing that she'd be stepping away to treat her ongoing battle with depression and anxiety due to her lupus condition, Revival singer Selena Gomez made a return to the public spotlight tonight (Nov. 20) at the American Music Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Gomez's appearance marks her first time at a public event since her announcement in August.

“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges..I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off,” she said in the statement over the summer.
