Popular Airline Files For Bankruptcy. What About Your Boise Flight?
If you fly out of Boise often, you've either flown Spirit Airlines or have been tempted to fly Spirit Airlines because of its incredibly low airfare. Today, the discount airline filed for bankruptcy, and if you have holiday travel already booked with them, you might need to be concerned.
Spirit Airlines first came to Boise in August 2022 with nonstop service to Las Vegas. The airline had planned on adding additional nonstop flights to Portland and Seattle, but those have not yet been added. The flights to Las Vegas, where Spirit is based, allow them to connect through Vegas to any of their other worldwide destinations from Boise.
Spirit Airlines exclusively flies Airbus A320 jets, a model plagued with engine problems lately that have grounded many of its planes. It's been trying to merge with JetBlue since 2022, but it wasn't able to meet all of the regulatory approvals in time.
All of these problems caused the perfect financial storm that led to Spirit Airlines' filing for bankruptcy protection today. The move will allow them to reduce their debt and give them more flexibility in the future.
What does the filing mean for Boise passengers who have already purchased flights or are planning to purchase flights on the airline? As the year's busiest travel season approaches, it's easy to be uneasy about your travel plans when they involve an airline that has just gone bankrupt.
According to Spirit Airlines, flights that were going to be canceled have already been canceled. At this time, it doesn't appear that Boise flights have been affected. However, the airline does plan to slow down flights in the near future. If you have tickets booked for December or sometime next year, make sure to have a backup plan.
Spirit Airlines should eventually emerge from this better than before, but it's probably going to take some time.
