BOISE, Idaho.

Just so we're all on the same page, good ole Merriam-Webster defines adultery as "voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than that person's current spouse or partner." And according to the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy, it's more common than you think. AAMFT's data indicates 15 percent of married women and 25 percent of married men have admitted to stepping out on their spouse.

Idahoans & Infidelity

What does that look like in Boise? In 2021, Fox8 analyzed data on America's most adulterous cities, and Boise came in a lot higher than we anticipated. Out of the 20 cities polled, Boise has the seventh highest rate for stepping out on their spouse.

We're not naïve to the idea that infidelities occur everyday. After all, who doesn't know someone who's been betrayed or the betrayer? What's interesting about this data, however, is how starkly it contrasts with the values Boise is known for.

Whether they're on the left, the right, or somewhere in the middle politically speaking, Idahoans value integrity, honesty, and accountability—the very values mocked and dismissed by infidelity.

Why Do Partners Choose to Cheat?

So what compels an Idahoan, or anyone for that matter, to abandon their marital vows? How do people rationalize betraying and devastating the very person they promised to honor and love without end?

Well, according to VerWellMind, it's a pretty straightforward answer. Affairs stem from eight key reasons: anger mismanagement, low self-esteem, a lack of love, commitment issues, sexual desire, circumstance, and feelings of neglect. You don't have to agree with it, but at least now you have a better understanding of why some partners choose to cheat.
