Need More Teeth
A teen finally admitted that he hit an officer head on because he was answering a text. Here is the story, please read it and then we can talk.
When the story first came out I had a feeling he was using his phone to text. We have a law against texting on the books, but it doesn’t have any teeth. Nobody pays attention to it because the penalty is so light.
Texting while driving is just as dangerous if not more than driving drunk. So why won’t our elected officials do something about it? Usually it’s because they do it. That’s about the only reason I can see for it not being a tougher penalty.
Between now and when the next legislative session starts, we need to flood our elected officials with calls demanding a stop to texting and driving. I’m for a $500.00 first time ticket and a restricted license for a year. When you text and drive, you make a decision to do so. When you drive drunk/impaired, you aren’t in the condition to make the proper decision. So which is worse, being in the right frame of mind and making the wrong choice or being not in the right frame of mind and choosing.
My truck got rear ended while stopped at a stop sign by a young man texting. He didn’t even slow down because he had to text. He knew it was wrong, but did it anyway. He wasn’t impaired in any way, he just had to text. His Jeep was totaled and it cost his insurance company almost $2000.00 to get me a new bumper and everything else he destroyed. Thank God my daughter and her husband both wear seatbelts when they are in a vehicle so they had mostly bumps, bruises and sprained muscles.
With all the construction happening, it’s only a matter of time before we have something major because of texting and driving.
Sorry about the rant, but this is one of my peeves. Please call your local rep. and give them an ear full. If we make enough noise, change will happen.
