No one has ever been shy about putting Tom Cruise’s apparent death wish front and center whenever it’s time to promote a new Mission: Impossible movie. Like with previous entries in the series, most of the chatter surrounding Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation has revolved around the myriad of ways the franchise’s leading man put his life on the line for our entertainment. The new trailer puts many of his craziest stunts front and center, including that still-jaw-dropping shot of Cruise clinging to the the side of an airplane as it takes off. The movie’s message is clear: this man almost died for you. Reward him with your ticket purchase.

There is plenty of other action in the new trailer, too. There are car chases, motorcycle chases, fistfights, gun battles, and a scene that apparently required Cruise to hold his breath for six minutes. Director Christopher McQuarrie is a master of the lean, mean action scene. He likes making his characters suffer, but he also likes showcasing characters with exceptional abilities. A McQuarrie protagonist is a professional who manages to scrape by even after he’s had the stuffing kicked out of him. In other words, he’s perfect for this series and a perfect partner for Cruise, who is always looking for new ways to almost die on camera.

Like the past trailers, this one is light on plot and heavy on action. Ethan Hunt and his team are hunting a mysterious group called the Syndicate. Things go wrong. Things explode. The team is forced to go rogue. Jeremy Renner looks very serious. Simon Pegg provides the comic relief. Ving Rhames is really happy to be there. Like all Mission: Impossible movies, the flavor look very different even when the basic recipe is the same. But who are we to complain about such an effective recipe?

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation opens on July 31, 2015.
