The future of John Mayer's music involves a look back at his past with ex-girlfriend Katy Perry, he's admitted in a new interview with The New York Times.

Mayer, whose new album The Search for Everything drops in April, confirmed early release "Still Feel Like Your Man" is, indeed, about Perry, whom he dated on and off between 2012 and 2016. The song includes lyrics like "I still keep your shampoo in my shower, in case you wanna wash your hair / And I know that you probably found yourself someone somewhere, but I do not really care."

“Who else would I be thinking about?” he said about Perry. “And by the way, it’s a testament to the fact that I have not dated a lot of people in the last five, six years. That was my only relationship. So it’s like, give me this, people.”

Despite a concrete 2016 breakup, Mayer and Perry have generally spoken favorably about each other to the press, and recorded "Who You Love" together for Mayer's Paradise Love.

“[John]’s just a fantastic partner,” Perry told Marie Claire in 2013, “I’ve been a fan of his for such a long time. He’s got a brilliant, brilliant mind. It’s a rad, mature relationship.”
