The Meridian Anti-Drug Coalition along with St. Luke’s, Crime Stoppers of Southwest Idaho, Shred-it and the Meridian Chamber of Commerce will be holding a free event designed to rid homes of unwanted prescription drugs and safely dispose of documents that can be used by identity thieves.

This free event will be held this Saturday, (April 29), from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s Meridian (520 S. Eagle Road).

This drug take back event is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s program to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

At last October’s Take-Back event, 571 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs were safely disposed of.  In the last seven years at its 12 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 7.1 million pounds of pills nation wide.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

In addition, Crime Stoppers of Southwest Idaho will also be at the event providing free shredding (up to five bags). The shredding is free, but donations for this nonprofit will be accepted on site.
