Each year on February 2nd we have to sit around and wait on Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania to know whether we're going to have more winter, or if spring will come early. Idaho has apparently had enough of that nonsense, plus winter has made us stir crazy.  So we're doing something new for Groundhog Day in Boise this year.

Since Groundhog Day is on 2/2/17, there's an opportunity to join a 2.2 mile run right here in Boise.  And it's a virtual run, so there's no organized start or finish, and you can do the run entirely on your own, send in the stats, and the organizers will send you a medal.

The cost to enter is $17, and with that you help out the International Children's Heart Foundation with 15 percent of the proceeds.  Organizers say just complete the race on Groundhog Day Thursday, or anytime during the month of February. We are active and healthy, and ready to kick winter in the pants.

The experts are predicting, by the way, that Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow on Groundhog Day over in PA, meaning there will be six more weeks of winter for all of us. That is one powerful rodent.  He's seen his shadow 87 percent of the time, and his predictions have been accurate 39 percent of the time.

We might be better off trusting an actual forecast, which is looking kinda wintry with temps in the 30's with the chance of precip over the next few days.  Can we do 2.2 miles on the cozy warm treadmill?
